AP EC 309: ECONOMICS OF AGRICULTURAL MARKETING, FALL 2003

TEXT: Marketing of Agricultural Products, 9th edition, by Kohls and Uhl, MacMillan Publishing Co.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

1. Study the basic concepts of the marketing of agricultural commodities, including marketing functions and organizations, efficiency criteria, and consumer behavior.

2. Develop and use the tools of economic theory to analyze issues related to the marketing of agricultural commodities.

3. Use the tools of economic theory to analyze issues related to the marketing of agricultural commodities.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to attend class and are responsible for material covered in any class missed, including assignments and date changes for exams, etc. Attendance will be recorded each day. A maxiumu of four unexcused absences will be allowed, after which each absence will result in the semester grade being reduced by 2%. A detailed, written reason for an absence must be presented in writing and is subject to the approval of the instructor.

The instructor will inform the class in advance if he will not attend a particular class, in which case, arrangements will be made for a substitute instructor or other alternatives. However, in case of an absence for which no advance arrangements have been made, students are authorized to leave after a 10 minute wait.

GUEST SPEAKERS: There will be number of guest speakers discussing topics dealing with the marketing of agricultural commodities. A written report summarizing each presentation is due the next class after each presentation.

CHAPTER QUIZZES: It is expected that each chapter will be read before class discussion. A short quiz will be given on each chapter at the beginning of its discussion in class.

GRADES:
Three exams (dates tentative)    75% (25 % each)
September 20- Chapters 1-7
October 25 - Chapters 8-11
December 7- Chapters 12, 20-21

LETTER GRADES: Final letter grades in each case will be assigned by ranking numerical scores. There is no predetermined score for a specific letter grade. Letter grades are assigned based on the relativity of all numerical scores.

 

COURSE OUTLINE: The outline of the text will be the basis for discussion. Additional material will be assigned as appropriate. There will be guest speakers who are involved with businesses or institutions involved in agricultural marketing.
