APEC 490 — International Agribusiness Study Tour of Argentina

Course Description and Contact Information

The Department of Applied Economics and Statistics is offering the course APEC 490 — International Agribusiness Study Tour of Argentina in the Spring Semester of 2010. The course is taught by Dr. Todd D. Davis from Clemson University and Dr. Walt Prevatt from Auburn University. The course includes six weekly meetings prior to a two-week trip to Argentina. The course provides three credit hours and is open for juniors and seniors from any degree program.

The objective of the study-tour trip is to provide an international learning experience through a fifteen-day study-tour of Argentine production agriculture, agribusiness, government agencies, commodity markets, and other supporting institutions.

The tour occurs in March to coincide with Clemson University’s Spring break and with corn and soybean harvest in South America.  By visiting at harvest-time, Argentina’s current agricultural capacity  and potential for future improvement will be clearly illustrated.

The study-tour allows the students to interview Argentine experts to learn more about the country’s economy and agricultural sector. Visits to U.S. agribusiness operating in Argentina will help the target audience understand why these companies are investing in South America instead of the Southeastern U.S.

The itinerary of trip includes Buenos Aires city and the provinces of Buenos Aires, Mendoza, San Luis and Rosario. All domestic transportation will be done in a private 18 passenger minibus with private certified chauffeurs.
