Graduate Student Research

Each student in the Thesis Option M.S. program or in the Ph.D. program must select a research problem, develop an outline setting forth a research plan, and a condut a research project in consultation with the major advisor. The report of this research must satisfy thesis or dissertation standards for M.S. and Ph.D. students. Non-thesis Option M.S. students, including Peace Corp Masters International (PCMI) students, are expected to write a paper of professional quality.

Copies of the thesis, dissertation or professional paper must be delivered to the student's advisory committee at least three weeks before the final oral examination. After the examination, revisions by the student must be approved by the major advisor and committee members.

The non-thesis M.S. student is responsible for printing final copies of the professional paper and submitting one to the department for its files.

Theses and dissertations are submitted electronically. Detailed instructions for formatting and submitting the thesis or disseration are found at http://www.grad.clemson.edu/manuscript/ . Each Ph.D. and Thesis M.S. student is required to order a hard copy of their thesis/dissertation for the Department's files.

Each graduate student in the department will be required to present a formal and an informal seminar. In most cases, the subject matter is related to the student's research. Non-thesis M.S. or PCMI students may discuss his/her internship, Peace Corp service or professional paper.

Publication is an integral part of research. All Thesis Option M.S. students and all Ph.D. students are expected to complete research of publishable quality. Significant changes are usually necessary before theses or disserations can be submitted for publication, and the major professor will have the responsibility for determing when such a draft has been prepared.
