The USDA estimates farmers intend to plant 79.9 million acres to corn and 62.5
million acres to soybeans in 1996. This constitutes an eleven percent
increase in corn plantings from 1994 acres planted. Soybean acres were
projected to be essentially the same as last year. The results are from a
national survey of farmer intentions taken on or about March 1, 1996. Table 1
displays the 1996 estimated plantings intended for the crops. Tables 2 and 3
present greater detail on US intentions and acreage shares for corn and beans,
respectively.

Southeastern acreage is generally expected to increase due to higher relative prices and increased flexibility embedded in the new Farm Bill. South Carolina is currently projected to plant 340,000 acres of corn and 540,000 acres of soybeans. This constitutes a 50,000 acre increase in corn plantings and a 10,000 acre decline in soybean plantings from 1995 acres planted in the state. Anecdotally, many feel these numbers may increase as actual plantings become apparent.
