The Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Clemson University in upstate South Carolina is part of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences. Nearly 50 faculty and support staff are actively engaged in teaching, research and extension activities at Clemson and at several sites around South Carolina. Dr. Michael D. Hammig is the Department Chair.
Clemson University offers the Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural and applied economics with a major in either Agricultural Economics or Community and Economic Development (CED).
The Department offers the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Applied Economics, a thesis option Master of Science (M.S.) in Agricultural and Applied Economics and a non-thesis option Master of Science (M.S.) in Agricultural and Applied Economics. In the Ph.D. program, offered cooperatively with the Department of Economics, students obtain a high level of professional competence in economic theory, methodology and areas of specialization. The thesis option M.S. is a research-oriented degree that allows the student to pursue an independent research program while receiving classroom instruction emphasizing applications of theory and quantitative methods. The non-thesis option M.S. is a professional degree designed to provide practical training in economics and business.
The department provides economic information to citizens, agricultural producers, and agribusiness in South Carolina through the Cooperative Extension Service and other outreach activities. This includes management, marketing, economic and community development, and leadership development.
